BBC INTERVIEW: The chaps at BBC Radio Oxford asked the GetJazzical boys to take care of an interview with Liane Carroll for them and for good measure they also decided to interview our heroes as well, have a gander at the video…
It really doesn’t seem that long ago when apples were fruits, tablets were taken for headaches, Jordan was a Hashemite Kingdom, and classical music was something you had to really look for, pay a lot for, and not really get as it wasn’t really for you. In fact it wasn’t really for anyone. Most people at classical concerts couldn’t hear the music for the sound of the self congratulatory conversations going on in their own head, imagining the chat at the work place the next day – “Oh the Elgar was divine, but the champagne was warm” and so forth. You might start to think that we’re beginning to sound like a stuck record, but the internet really is changing this.
To kick off the relaunch of GetJazzical, we played the man whose hair was once muse to Jedward – Kelly Rossum. In the latter part of ’09, our favourite New York muted trumpeter, obviously in response to the decision made by the British public regarding the aforementioned Jedward, shaved his head, went all black and white and Ross Kemp-y, and created one of the best videos I’ve seen on YouTube since that kid bit another kids finger.
Taking the silent movie of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde, Rossum has created a new soundtrack, performed by the Nicollet Circus Band. Check out the lab transformation scene below, then go to his youtube channel to watch the rest of the film.
Strangely he hasn’t had as many hits as the community channel, but maybe one day he’ll take one of that Australian girl’s “hilarious” videos and stick some gangster caper jazz on top of it so that hundreds of thousands of dull and bored people can enjoy some “scathing” and “culturally trendsetting” monologue about people who kiss in public while enjoying the genuinely brilliant sounds of Mr. Rossum.
While Olly is back in NY, living a life of pure hedonistic debauchery and espressos, I (Alasdair) have been plugging away, trying to find the best in new music and new musicians. Last night saw the LSO play at the Barbican, a fantastically “yes our building was built in the 60s and we love it” venue. It was an interesting, 20th Century composer set list, and if my tickets were not free I probably wouldn’t have risked the cash on the concert. Thank heavens for freebies then, as after 15 minutes of Charles Ives and me eyeing the nearest exit, we were introduced to, and I fell in love with, Yuja Wang…
Always determined to bring you further into the world of GetJazzical, we’ve taken the lens cap off the recording equipment one more time in our latest video. Yes, it does look like we record our episodes in a laundry room, and yes Olly does look so pale he’s kind of see through, but that’s why he took that al-expenses paid trip to New York.
Don’t worry folks, we’ll be back to doing what we do best very soon. NOT appearing in front of a camera.
